It was sixty-seven years ago today that a legend was born in Roswell, New Mexico. The front-page headline in the Roswell Daily Record proclaimed “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer On Ranch In Roswell Region”. It was based on a press release from the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF), whose leadership would later that day “correct” the earlier account by saying the debris recovered was that of a weather balloon. According to Wikipedia, this correction seemed to put the matter to rest, and the widespread conspiracy theories would not develop until the late 1970s.
